Kay Scarpetta is enjoying a leisurely morning with her husband FBI profiler Benton Wesley on the morning of her birthday. They are just about to leave on a vacation in Miami when seven mystical copper coins appear on their courtyard wall. Coins are polished pennies from the year 1981. The same year when Scarpetta´s dear nice Lucy was born. Soon she is called to investigate a body that seems to be the work of a serial sniper.
Patricia Cornwell´s newest book Flesh and blood takes Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta and those close to her in the middle of a crime investigation once again. The book is 22nd Scarpetta thriller.
The sniper leaves no trace except for tiny copper fragments. That is why the media starts to call him Copperhead after a Twitter account that he has hijacked. The sniper shoots seemingly impossible shots to cause instant death. He knows awful lot about Scarpetta and her family and friends which makes Kay feeling threatened.
“The victims appear to have had nothing in common, and there is no pattern to indicate where the killer will strike next. First New Jersey, then Massachusetts, and then the murky depths off the coast of South Florida, where Scarpetta investigates a shipwreck, looking for answers that only she can discover and analyze.”
Kay´s former Chief Forensic Investigator, police officer Marino has some kind of disagreement with another police called Machado and things seem to get worse and worse between them but Marino won´t reveal to Scarpetta what´s going on. Also other people seem to keep secrets from her. What has happened between Kay´s niece Lucy and Janet? Janet´s heirloom ring is missing from Lucy´s finger. Lucy has also bought a brand new blue Ferrari.
“Lucy might know who Copperhead is. Maybe Benton has his own suspicions too and for some reason they won´t tell me.”
Somebody makes a credit card fraud with Scarpetta´s credit card. Also CFC´s computers are breached and IT guru Lucy´s DNA sample has been compromised.
Sleazy insurance investigator Rand Bloom has an impact on the investigations and as Scarpetta notices he has more than one case in common with Kay´s past and present.
New cases are piling up in Chief Medical Examiner´s office. The amount of pennies implies that the body account might accumulate up to seven. The experts working in and out of the Mortuary have a complex web of relationships that brings it´s own flavor to the story.
I am going to read you an extract from Patricia Cornwell´s another book called the Bone Bed.
